Skills Insight and ForestWorks are continuing efforts to support skills development in manual tree felling. This project builds on the 2023-24 Tree Felling Project which revised and updated three units for manual tree felling.

This project aims to address the challenge RTOs face in accessing suitable trees for training and assessment of tree felling units. The project team has developed a comprehensive stakeholder engagement strategy and an extensive database of stakeholders to help investigate partnerships that could facilitate identification and allocation of trees for training purposes. These stakeholders include individuals from registered training organisations (RTOs), tree and forest-related enterprises, forestry companies, local councils, and landowners.

A Project Working Group has also been established to provide advice on the proposed Tree Allocation Protocol. The protocol aims to create a broad framework for RTOs to collaborate with forest managers, government departments, and other relevant stakeholders to source trees for training purposes.

Once developed, the draft Tree Allocation Protocol will be published on the project page. Pilot testing of the protocol is planned to occur June – Sept 2025.
