Skills Insight is working with agricultural stakeholders to explore the development of an agricultural trade apprenticeship, following recommendations from the National Farmers Federation and Agricultural Workforce Working Group. There is strong support for the apprenticeship model among industry participants, recognising  its potential to create a structured pathway for learners to develop skills on the job. For employers and the broader industry, it offers a valuable way to attract, develop and retain the next generation of skilled workers, strengthening the future workforce.

This project was undertaken to explore the concept of a qualification that could be used to deliver apprenticeships across various agricultural occupations. It followed a feasibility study, which outlined how an apprenticeship could be realised, and was undertaken alongside work to map agricultural career pathways

Stakeholder engagement took place to assess support and identify engagement strategies for the development and implementation of an Ag Trade Apprenticeship. The requirements of the new training package product templates were also considered, along with identifying relevant licensing, legislation and regulations.

Through these engagements and activities, rationale emerged to wrap up project activities ahead of schedule and move to full development of a trade level Certificate III qualification. It became evident that producing the level of detail required, such as a draft qualification structure with units and skill sets, would effectively duplicate Training Package Product Development work. A report was submitted to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) for consideration, outlining work to date and recommending Skills Insight finalise this current project and commence development of the qualification. This approach avoids duplication of work, responds to stakeholder calls for timely progress and supports progress on national priorities for workforce development and food security.

Thank you to all stakeholders who consulted on the Concept for an Ag Trade Apprenticeship Project. Your insights have been invaluable in confirming strong support for the apprenticeship’s progression. Skills Insight will provide an update on the full development of the Ag Trade Apprenticeship Qualification when approved to commence.
