Skills Insight was proud to support the New Arborist of the Year Award competition celebrating fresh talent, skills development and dedication to the arboriculture industry.
Organised by Arboriculture Australia, the inaugural award went to Katie McMahon, who competed against other new arborists in events such as knot tying, tree identification, throwline, worksite safety assessment and a knowledge test.
“I was so surprised to win the award, and I’m grateful to Arboriculture Australia, the sponsors, volunteers and the other competitors who made it such a great day,” says Katie.
“Being an arborist is important to me as it allows me to contribute to the natural environment in my region, and I love being able to work outdoors and see lots of different trees, parks and gardens.”
Katie recently started work at Armidale Regional Council and is excited about the opportunity to care for the trees in her region. She plans to complete a Diploma of Arboriculture to further build on the skills she developed in the Certificate III in Arboriculture.
“I’m excited to learn more about assessing tree health, as well planning tree plantings and tree maintenance in urban areas,” she says.
The New Arborist of the Year Award competition took place on the 16 March at Telopea Park, Canberra, and received positive community support and industry feedback.
“I value the support of my colleagues and trainers from Power Safety Training Tamworth and am keen to further develop my industry skills with the team at Armidale Regional Council.”
Katie’s advice for people looking to get into arboriculture:
“Just give it a go! Before I started, I’d never touched a chainsaw or chipper. Having a supportive team around me meant I was able to develop my skills and confidence. I’m lucky to have found a career and industry that I love.”
